FACT SHEET 2003-2004

ASSISTANCE LEAGUE of Kansas City, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization and a chapter of NATIONAL ASSISTANCE LEAGUE, has a 21-year history of philanthropic service to the Greater Kansas City community. Over 250 members contributed over 18,000 volunteer hours to serve approximately 9,000 children and adults in 2003-2004.

SERVICES TO COMMUNITY

  • ASSAULT SURVIVOR KITS® were delivered to hospitals and organizations in Clay, Jackson, and Platte counties for use by approximately 100 victims of assault.
  • HUMAN OUTREACH PROJECT responded to various community needs, one of which was the distribution of donated items and 75 Christmas gifts for children at Synergy Services.
  • I'M IN CHARGE materials helped teach over 4000 elementary children safe self-care skills.
  • OPERATION FOSTER CHILDREN distributed backpacks with school supplies to 128 children, and served an additional 50 community children thru the Platte County Back to School Fair. Seventy five foster children were provided assistance from individual requests. Approximately 50 teen mothers and children were adopted at Christmas working with Synergy Services. Heartland Auxiliary, one of two auxiliaries of ASSISTANCE LEAGUE of Kansas City, runs this project.
  • OPERATION HUG has given over 3500 teddy bears to comfort children in crisis.
  • OPERATION SCHOOL BELL® provided new clothing for 825 elementary school children.
  • ASSISTEENS® assisted the chapter in its projects as well as participating in various monthly projects of its own including a community blood drive and Operation Senior Citizen.

FUNDING

  • THE ReSALE SHOP, an upscale thrift store located at 6257 North Oak Trafficway, opened in August, 1997 and recycles gently used items at very reasonable prices. THE ReSALE SHOP is completely staffed by member volunteers, serving over 11,000 customers this past year.
  • Poinsettia Sales average 3,800 plants sold for holiday giving and enjoyment.
  • SOCK IT TO 'EM sent invitations and received donations from 431 persons.
  • Trick or Treat Village at Antioch Center Mall was staffed by ASSISTANCE LEAGUE of Kansas City members with ASSISTANCE LEAGUE of Kansas City being designated the recipient of this benefit during 2003.
  • The Heartland Run annually held in October, benefits foster children in Clay and Platte counties.
  • Donations and Grants from individuals, businesses, corporations, and foundations also helped fund services. To designate United Way donations, please write in ASSISTANCE LEAGUE of Kansas City on pledge form.
  • Price Chopper's Extra Helpings Reward program and Hen House's Reward program, as well as the dues collected by ASSISTEEN's members provided funds for ASSISTEENS projects.

MEMBERSHIP

ASSISTANCE LEAGUE of Kansas City's membership is comprised of over 250 multi-talented, volunteers in the following member classifications: Voting, Auxiliary (Heartland and Assisteens (teenagers)) and Nonvoting. All are residents of Clay, Jackson, Johnson, and Platte counties. There are no paid employees.
