SENIOR OUTREACH SERVICE PROGRAM
Three years ago we started the Senior Outreach Service Program and adopted two senior resident homes. For these senior facilities, we provided funding for beauty shop services, books, movies, games, magazine subscriptions, and senior “pals” who adopt a resident.
We have expanded this program to include six senior facilities. Our main objective is to help facilities provide for residents who have few financial assets at their disposal. We developed an application process for senior facilities to present their requests for services to our selection committee. There are no specific requirements for the services program, except that our main thrust is to help those with the most urgent need.
Presently Senior Outreach Service provides friendship and support to residents of six Northland senior care centers. Assistance League volunteers are matched as senior pals to residents of these senior facilities to provide support through personal visits and greeting cards on holidays and birthdays. Supplies and equipment, such as magazine subscriptions, puzzle books, DVDs and bingo cards, are also donated to enhance activities for residents. Gifts of lap robes, slipper socks, cardigans and toiletries also provide comfort. More than 500 senior residents were served last year through this program.
